NEW YORK & CHICAGO
New York is the architectural icon of the 20th century and a must-visit for anyone who loves buildings, art and urban planning.
New York is worldwide known for its skyscrapers that shape Manhattan's skyline: Chrysler Building, the Empire State Building or the Seagram Building are World famous. New buildings emerge every year in the city, most of them designed by some of the best-known architects: WTC 7 by SOM, the New Museum of Contemporary Art by SANAA, the Beekman by Gehry or the New York Times Building by Renzo Piano are few of them.
Chicago emerged from the economic depression and impressive public spaces and magnificent buildings await its visitors nowadays. Chicago doesn’t just offer skyscrapers like the Sears Tower. There are also impressive buildings: form Baroque or Art Deco, to Neo-gothic and contemporary design. We can visit part of Frank Lloyd Wright’s work in Chicago and follow his footsteps in Oak Park, Illinois.
CHICAGO, WISCONSIN & PENNSYLVANIA
Frank Lloyd Wright was famous for his use of what is called organic architecture. The central idea of this concept is to promote harmony between human habitation and the natural environment. Another of his fundamental contributions to modern architecture was his used of free ground, with which he created impressive spaces that flow with no limits. This idea is evident in what are called “prairie-houses” in Illinois. The have low horizontal lines and open interior spaces.
After living in different locations, Frank Lloyd Wright settled down in Taliesin, Wisconsin, where he built his own house and a studio inspired by teacher-student relationships. We can see part of his main works like Robie House, Unity Temple, Johnson Wax building, Taliesin or masterpiece Fallingwater and follow his steps through the United States. Along the way, we will see another building by other masters like Mies Van der Rohe (including Farsworth house) on a tour that will take us to Illinois, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania.
LOS ANGELES & SAN FRANCISCO
In Los Angeles we find example of many different architectural styles with great contrasts. From traditional architecture, to stunning buildings by Frank O. Gehry, from residences by Richard Neutra, to more innovative architecture by Morphosis, etc. Los Angeles may seem an overwhelming city, but with the help of our architects it will be easier, because you will discover its essential points in the field of architecture.
Among with it´s special geography and topography, San Francisco is internationally known for it’s eclectic Victorian architecture as well as other icons like Palace of Fine Arts, Transamerica Pyramid, Coit Tower or the Academy of Sciences. San Francisco is a truly unique city with many different fascinating architectural styles.
MEXICO CITY & GUADALAJARA
The main objective of this trip is to visit the work of Mexican architects, without forgetting the traces of the Aztecs and other architectures over the time. We will focus on new buildings by contemporary architects but also looking at the past.
Luis Barragán was one of the most important Mexican architects of the 20th century. His work was refining a language in which we can find elements from African and Maghrebi architecture. Ricardo Legorreta’s work is based on the proportions of color and the coexistence of structural and architectural elements. We will visit Mexico City and the surrounding area and also Guadalajara, and we will stop at other important sites like Toluca, Teotihuacan or Tlatelolco. This trip will give you a global overview of a good portion of Mexico through its architecture, not forgetting the historical, cultural and even the gastronomic aspects.
The architectural trip to Brazil is composed of three important Brasilian cities where you can appreciate the country’s diversity. From the city to the countryside, from colonial villas to one of the most important metropolises in the world, from beaches to waterfalls. To make your trip as extensive as possible, we propose São Paulo, Brasilia and Rio de Janeiro.
